However, after launch, most coasters don’t use electrical or mechanical energy to send you careening around the track. Coasters do need energy to do this, but they actually get the energy from that first hill! In all coasters, that first hill is critical. It needs to be high enough to give the coaster the energy it needs to power through all the other hills, twists, and turns without stalling out. But that hill can’t be too high—otherwise, it may give the coaster too much energy, making it swerve off the track during a turn.

The POTENTIAL ENERGY experienced by roller coasters is really called GRAVITATIONAL potential energy because the energy comes from GRAVITY.
